This is my absolute favorite shot of the London Underground. I took this when I went to London with my partner. We took the tube from Heathrow to Paddington and we were waiting for the train to Russel Square when I started wandering around. The light hit this building so nicely that I was just captivated and spent probably 1/2 an hour taking various shots. This is the best shot of the group and even it has a problem: it can’t be cropped to 8×10 without losing the 14 or making the composition just ugly.

I am by no means an architectural photographer. I don’t have the equipment, I don’t particularly enjoy the process, and the shots are a tremendous pain in the ass both to get in the camera and to manipulate in the digital darkroom. But I’ve been to London 4 times now and I’m always fascinated by the architecture and life that happens in London’s tube stations. When I stayed in Hyde Park this year and ventured into the depths of the Notting Hill Gate tube station — which is a story all it’s own — and saw this lonely bench, with the discarded paper, framed by two lovely columns and festooned with the ubiquitous “Way Out” and tube stop indicators, I had to snap several shots. This one is my favorite.
